Blair man charged with attempted homicide
WHITEHALL — Authorities have charged Andrew  Hanson, a Blair man with attempted first-degree intentional homicide in a stabbing early Monday in Blair.

Hanson also was charged Tuesday in Trempealeau County Circuit Court with aggravated battery while using a dangerous weapon.

Hanson is being held on $250,000 cash bond, according to the County District Attorney’s office.

He is accused of stabbing another man about 1 a.m. Monday in a Blair tavern, according to Blair police. The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to Tri-County Memorial Hospital in Whitehall, but his condition was not available.

Hanson’s preliminary hearing is set for 10:30 a.m. Sept. 26.

Authorities did not name the tavern or release any other details on the incident.
7-Day Permits Available for the 2008 Gun-Deer Season
FORT McCOY, Wis. -- Fort McCoy is making available a seven-day permit for the 2008 Gun-Deer Season. The permit will be valid from Monday, Nov. 24 – Sunday, Nov. 30.
This new permit option will allow additional hunting opportunities, as well as help manage the installation deer population. This permit is not valid during the opening weekend of the nine-day season, Saturday, Nov. 22 – Sunday, Nov. 23. Permits valid for the entire nine-day season, which runs from Nov. 22-30, already have been issued.
A random drawing will be used to award the seven-day permits. Preference will be given to individuals who applied for a 2008 Fort McCoy nine-day Gun-Deer Season permit, but were not selected. A maximum of 250 seven-day permits will be available.
The application deadline is Friday, Oct. 24. Applications can be mailed or hand carried to the Permit Sales Office, building 2168 South 8th Ave. at Fort McCoy. Permits will be processed and mailed the week of Oct. 27.

Voters Encouraged to Register Now for Presidential Election


Are you a new resident of the City of La Crosse?  Have you moved or changed your name since you last voted?  If so, City Clerk Teri Lehrke recommends you register to vote now.

The La Crosse City Clerk is reminding area residents that Wisconsin has a 20-day deadline for completing voter registration before the November 4 Presidential election.

Before October 15, voters may register in the clerk’s office, by voter registration drive or through the mail.  After October 15 and before Election Day, voters may register in the clerk’s office.  When registering after the October 15 deadline in the municipal clerk’s office or at the polling place on Election Day, Wisconsinites must provide proof of residence.

New voters must provide their Wisconsin driver’s license number or Wisconsin ID number, and write their name exactly as it is on the license. If they have neither one, they may use the last four digits of their Social Security number.

Voters can check election and voter registration information on the Internet before the November election using the State’s Voter Public Access website at http://elections.state.wi.us under Voter Information.  It’s easy to check whether or not you are registered to vote, and where your polling place is.  You simply type in your name and date of birth, or your complete address.  The Voter Public Access site provides voter registration confirmation and polling place information and lists the officers and officeholders for whom voters at a particular address can vote.
Local governments receive share of fuel tax, registration fees

Governor Jim Doyle has announced that quarterly checks totaling $103.25
million for General Transportation Aids, Connecting Highway Aids, and
Expressway Policing Aids have been conveyed to Wisconsin units of local
government.

The October payments from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation
(WisDOT) include $100,017,700 in General Transportation Aids to 1,923 units
of government; $3.2 million to 121 municipalities for Connecting Highway
Aids; and $272,700 to Milwaukee County for Expressway Policing Aids.

This year, local governments will share an estimated $414 million from the
state transportation fund to build and maintain local roads and bridges, and
in Expressway Policing Aids that support the Milwaukee County Sheriff
Department's patrol of Milwaukee expressways. Quarterly payments for 2008
are being sent the first Monday in January, April, July, and October.

General Transportation Aids help defray the costs of constructing,
maintaining, and operating roads and streets under local jurisdiction.
Connecting Highway Aids reimburse municipalities for maintenance and traffic
control of certain state highways within municipalities.

Communities also receive state transportation fund revenues for public
transit, elderly and disabled transportation, and airport and harbor
development from WisDOT. State and federal funds will also be allocated for
specific highway and bridge construction projects.

High Speed Police Chase

A deputy with the La Crosse County Sherriff’s office attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. A pursuit when the vehicle failed to stop and continued through Holmen and East on County Trunk Hwy V at speeds 100 mph. The pursuit was terminated due to high speeds and the suspect drivers actions.

The suspect was apprehended on 10-09-08 at approximately 2am as a passenger in a different vehicle.

The suspect’s vehicle was located near STH 35 and Amsterdam Prairie Road after it was involved in an accident. The suspect is also being charged with burglary and entry to a building which occurred near the accident scene.
